In 1865, Asa Packer, an industrial pioneer, entrepreneur and philanthropist, founded the university. Packer recognized the need for workers who were broadly educated in the liberal 
arts and sciences—young people who could combine practical skills with theory, judgment, reasoning and self-discipline. That vision remains true and clear today.
