An Exceptional Place – Lehigh University

Posted on March 01, 2010 by Head Coach

Lehigh University is recognized across the globe as a premier residential research university, ranking in the top tier of research universities each year. Lehigh offers students the best of both worlds: the small, personal setting of a liberal arts school, with a research 1 environment. We are a comprehensive university, offering majors and programs in four colleges: arts and sciences, business, education and engineering.

In 1865, Asa Packer, an industrial pioneer, entrepreneur and philanthropist, founded the university. Packer recognized the need for workers who were broadly educated in the liberal Lehigh University arts and sciences—young people who could combine practical skills with theory, judgment, reasoning and self-discipline. That vision remains true and clear today.

During their time at Lehigh, students are immersed in a distinctive learning experience that encourages learning in and outside of the classroom. The focus is on an interdisciplinary education, which nurtures the capacity to think deeply, nimbly and creatively – all skills necessary to transform ambitions into accomplishments. Our graduates leave as accomplished scholars who are well-equipped to tackle complex challenges, and to lead change.

More than 4,600 undergraduate and 2,000 graduate students call Lehigh’s beautiful campus “home.” Nestled in the heart of the Lehigh Valley, the 1,600-acre campus is within close proximity to urban centers such as New York City and Philadelphia

An Exceptional Place

Lehigh University is an exceptional place. As one of the most distinguished universities in the Lehigh Library country, we are working to ensure that Lehigh remains true to its mission to advance learning by integrating teaching, research, and service for decades to come.

Our goal is to continue to create the new knowledge and develop the leaders necessary to meet the challenges of a rapidly evolving world.

How are we accomplishing that? By continuing to recruit and retain the best and brightest faculty and staff, who are dedicated to challenging both conventional wisdom and their students in classrooms, laboratories, workshops, and in the field.

There is also a sense of family that pervades the entire Lehigh community. It is a family that adheres to core values: integrity and honesty, equitable community, academic freedom, intellectual curiosity, collaboration, commitment to excellence, and service.

Lehigh undergraduates can customize their curricula by selecting from among 2,000 courses and can easily transfer from among the university’s three undergraduate colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business and Economics and the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science. Students interested in a teaching career can also enroll in a five-year program through the graduate College of Education and undergraduates may also minor in education.

Indeed, the breadth of a Lehigh education is sweeping — undergraduates can study abroad in 40 countries, spend a semester in Washington, D.C., and undertake internships and cooperative-learning assignments in some of the world’s most prestigious work environments. In addition, traditional classroom experiences are complemented by an assortment of exciting interdisciplinary programs that challenge students to solve real-world problems as part of student-faculty teams.

Lehigh’s commitment to graduate studies and research helps to create a vibrant, innovative campus environment – an environment that addresses society’s grand challenges and launches students into leadership positions across industry, academia, and government. Our graduate students enjoy the best that academia has to offer – an incredible breadth and depth of expertise, resources and partnerships, and a collaborative mindset that distinguishes highly-selective, top-ranked programs like those you’ll find at Lehigh:

Research Overview, Research That Matters: Creating Knowledge that Benefits Society and the World

The news headlines remind us daily that this is a critical time in our history. The quality and quantity of natural resources-oceans, forests, freshwater, air-are stressed by the increasing demands of human activity. At the same time, while the U.S. population faces an obesity epidemic, nearly a billion people do not have enough food to eat and more than a billion do not have access to clean water.

The challenges that we face are formidable, but the good news is that Lehigh professors and students are tackling these 21st century challenges head-on.

That’s evident in the type of research projects that are ongoing at Lehigh-research to bring clean drinking water to remote parts of the world that resulted in Lehigh students traveling to India, research to treat preschool ADHD without drugs, research using computer models to shed important light on heart disease, research into alternate forms of energy, research to develop a new class of antidepressants for the treatment of disorders of stress, mood, and behavior, and research to find the flaws and correct them in current computer voting machines to protect future U.S. elections-to name a few.

As a world-class research university, Lehigh is committed to performing research that matters. We pursue knowledge for the benefit of society. At Lehigh, research provides the training ground for tomorrow’s leaders. We welcome you to this Web site, and encourage you to explore its pages and to learn more about the difference-making research being performed at Lehigh.

Student life at Lehigh creates a balanced educational experience that integrates formal studies with residential life, a vibrant array of student organizations and activities, leadership development, community service, Greek life, the arts, international programs and athletics. We complement our national academic reputation with highly regarded programs “outside the classroom,” producing leaders who are held in high regard for their character as well as their achievements. We challenge our students to become responsible, engaged citizens of the campus community … and the larger society.

The Mulvihill Golf Leaning Center, Greens and Driving Range, Are Closed For The Season

March 17, 2010 is our target reopen date.

The Mulvihill Golf Learning Center is a USGA Qualified Training Facility located on the north side of the Goodman Campus. The driving range features 20 well-spaced driving stations with five target greens, which allows golfers to practice a variety of shots from various distances. The large Bent Grass practice green has ten holes with an assortment of different lies to help golfers work on their short game. There’s also a Bent Grass chipping green with three sand bunkers. The indoor bays allow golfers to practice inside while hitting out onto the range off of artificial turf mats. Additionally it has a 672-square foot practice green and chipping area providing our golfers the ability to work on their game year round.

A team of Lehigh students from various majors conceptually designed the complex. The students combined their knowledge of engineering, architecture, marketing and budgeting to design a facility that would serve the needs of the varsity golf programs and the Lehigh community.

Mission Statement
