History

Northwestern University is a private institution founded in 1851 to serve the Northwest Territory, an area that now includes the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and parts of Minnesota. In 1853 the founders purchased a 379-acre tract of land on the shore of Lake Michigan 12 miles north of Chicago. They established a campus and developed the land near it, naming the surrounding town Evanston in honor of one of the University’s founders, John Evans. After completing its first building in 1855, Northwestern began classes that fall with two faculty members and 10 students.

Campuses

Northwestern has three campuses. Two campuses are located on Lake Michigan: a 240-acre campus in Evanston, the first suburb north of Chicago, and a 25-acre campus in Chicago. One campus is located in Doha, Qatar.

Academics at Northwestern

Northwestern is a major private research university with 12 academic divisions located on two lakefront campuses in Evanston and Chicago. By any measure, Northwestern ranks among the premier universities in the nation, combining the resources of a major research university with the intimacy of a small college. The number of undergraduates here is relatively small — only 8,000 — yet, with more than 100 formal academic concentrations in six undergraduate schools, we offer an astonishing range of study.

Northwestern’s excellence is evident in many ways: test scores and class rank of entering students, library holdings, the success of our graduates. What sets us apart from many other large universities, however, is our commitment to undergraduate teaching: Our faculty teach more than 97 percent of the courses on campus, and the opportunities for undergraduates to do research projects or independent study are plentiful.

Tufts University – As legend has it, when a relative asked Charles Tufts what he would do with his inherited land, and more particularly with "that bleak hill over in Medford," Tufts replied, "I will put a light on it."

• Founded in 1962, the Beelzebubs, an all-male a cappella group, is one of the oldest student groups on campus. Known as the Bubs, the ensemble’s actual name is "Jumbo’s Disciples: The Beelzebubs"—a play on John Milton’s description of the devil’s right-hand man. The group, which averages 12 members at a time, has performed around the world, including appearances on CBS’s Late Night with David Letterman and at Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game at Fenway Park.

• Named for its location, South Hall was built in 1991 on the Medford/Somerville campus. The 378-bed residence hall, Tufts’ largest, is known for its rooms, which are long and thin, as opposed to the square rooms found in most other residence halls on campus.

• The carillon of 25 bells in Goddard Chapel, which ring daily at 5 p.m., was begun in 1908 with an "A" bell. Given by the Class of 1898, the first bell rang to announce football victories and other Tufts events. In 1926, Eugene A. Bowen, who worked his way through Tufts as the campus bell-ringer, donated nine more bells to the university. The last 15 bells were given in 1964 in honor of former provost and senior vice president John P. Tilton.

The Hawaii football team’s passing attack has been so good for so long, it doesn’t seem to matter who is at quarterback.

From Timmy Chang to Colt Brennan, the Warriors always seem to find prolific passers.

They could put a pizza delivery guy behind center and he’d throw for 300 yards in a game.

Don’t believe it? Consider Bryant Moniz, the current starter, a sophomore walk-on who delivers pizzas to help pay for school and support his daughter, Cali.

Moniz might be the most improbable starting quarterback at the Football Bowl Subdivision level.

"It is an incredible story," Hawaii coach Greg McMackin said.

Earlier this year, Moniz was competing in something called the X-Flag Football League. "It was fun," he said. "It was good competition."

After attending Fresno City College in 2007 – he threw for 2,268 yards and 18 touchdowns – Moniz attended a local community college last fall to accumulate transferable credits.
